Haunted By Gotye (In a Good Way)

If you didn't get enough Gotye when I first raved about his album here, or with SNL's backstage parody, or with Walk Off the Earth's incredible five-band-members-on-one-guitar cover version of "Somebody," or with the Gotye-inspired Mister Rogers remix...

George R.R. Martin - Please Write Like the Wind

Fans of Game Of Thrones (the HBO series or the books) will love this, as will anyone who has ever impatiently waited for the next installment of their favorite book / movie / TV show.

The song is clever and the harmony is surprisingly pleasant, but the lyrics alone are worth the listen.

A Parody of a Cover of Pop Sensation Gotye

Often in contemporary music, an original song gains enough popular recognition to be regularly reinvented and re-recorded by musicians other than the original artist.

Occasionally, an original song becomes so popular and well-known, that it not only gets covered, it gets humorously parodied.

Rarely though, does a song become so deeply anchored in our collective consciousness that even its cover versions are successfully parodied.

Gotye's hit song "Somebody That I Used To Know" has spawned dozens of professional cover versions, not to mention hundreds of YouTube videos of toddlers, teens, choirs, and other groups putting their spin on the tune using everything from wineglasses to saw blades as musical instruments.

No cover of the song is more well-executed and innovative than this one performed by the group Walk Off The Earth, who performed their version with all five band members playing a single guitar. You've probably seen this video, which has been viewed an astonishing 110,000,000 times on YouTube.

Just in case you haven't, it's pretty damn clever.

The musical comedy show, The Key of Awesome, has now parodied the Walk Off The Earth cover version of "Somebody." It's a hilarious tongue-in-cheek effort that's worth a look, and with just under a million views on YouTube, maybe, just maybe, you haven't seen it yet. Enjoy.

Oh My God! Trampoline! (The Wrath of Bawbag)

One thing we have learned in the last decade since the rise of Facebook, YouTube, and other social media outlets is that regular people are incredibly creative and funny.

If you haven't noticed that, or dont' believe  it to be true, I give you - Hurricane Bawbag.

Hurricane Bawbag is the tongue-in-cheek moniker assigned to a major storm that hit Scotland this week with winds of up to 165mph. While the storm was serious news, the treatment of the storm on YouTube and Twitter (where the storm's scrotum-esque nickname was spawned) was fodder for silliness and humor. 

View these videos in the order presented, and for the love of God, don't have any food or drink in your mouth while you watch them.

This video from the storm started it all.

And then came the first spoof.

And then they got better.

And better still.

The storm affectionately known as Bawbag even inspired a parody song. Maybe it's Bob Dylan's melody (Blowin' In the Wind), maybe it's the funny-cuz-they're true lyrics ("It might be windy, and it might be blowin' a gale, but Hurricane Bawbag's t-shirts are on sale."), or maybe it's just my love for Scottish accents - but this is brilliant. Especially the ending.

Siri Gets Baked

Siri, the new "personal assistant" application that was part of the recent Apple software and iPhone release, finds answers to complex questions (like "where is the nearest Taco Bell") and tells them to you.

Since the release of Siri, bored nerds everywhere have been laboring to find the most clever or obscene uses for this talking computer application (something I have been doing for years with the PDF read-aloud function).

Anyway, I think we have a winner - Siri Gets Baked.
