JoePa Is Fired By Penn State

Graham Spanier, President of Penn State, and coach Joe Paterno
Earlier on Wednesday I made the case for why Joe Paterno could not continue in his role at Penn State, despite his expressed intent to retire at the end of this year.

While thousands of Penn State students are angered and clearly don't agree with me, the Board of Trustees apparently did. The 84 year-old coach, along with university president Graham Spanier, have both been terminated by the Board. The firings are a result of Paterno and Spanier failing to notify the police after they received reports of a Penn State football coach sexually abusing a child in 2002.

It's unclear exactly what Paterno's legacy will be now in college sports. With just over 400 victories, he is still the winningest coach ever in college football, but the record books will have not only an asterisk but also a giant shameful smudge next to his name.

  1. I think they need to fire McQueary, too. To actually WITNESS a child being sexually assaulted and just walk away without stopping it shows such a deficit in character. He should never be working with or around children or young adults.

  2. Andrea - Thanks for the comment. I have to agree. You don't go to JoePa's house a little later to talk it over - you go to campus security and the police RIGHT AWAY. The more I think about the whole thing the more it is starting to sicken me.

  3. Or, you run in and pull the bastard off the poor kid. I don't understand how that could NOT be someone's first reaction.

  4. Honestly, I think your last comment "pull the bastard off the poor kid" is the most reasonable thing I have read about any of this. It's that simple really.
