Writing at Starbucks has its drawbacks (see the earlier post - Yes, Lady at Starbucks), but it also has its benefits. Today I was stalked by a precious little Spanish girl who was enjoying a carton of organic milk and a cookie. She wouldn't stop staring at me, and at one point she literally laid across the table to get my attention. So, I gave her a smile and took her picture. (No, it wasn't all creepy - I asked her mom's permission before taking the pictures). On second thought, is that still creepy? Whatever! |
No! It is not creepy! We need to get back to respecting others in our community. I grew up in a small community in Ohio where everyone participated. As a parent I try my best not to fear the possibilities while at the same time protecting my child.
ReplyDeleteI went grocery shopping with Fia, my daughter, a few days ago while it was raining very hard. In front of me in the check out was what appeared to be a 50ish year old woman with her elderly father who were speaking Italian to each other in the check out. When I came out of the store it was down pouring. The woman in the checkout had gone to get the car for her elderly father. Faced with having to put my daughter in the rain I approached the elderly gentleman and asked if he could wait with her while I got the car. When he turned around I noticed he had a white glass eye. I had to already pump myself up to ask him and quite frankly his eye scared me. With this fear, and feeling bad I was feeling this way as I don't want my daughter to be scared, I continued with my plan and he agreed to stay with her while I got my car.
As I ran to my car, which took all of 15 seconds, I started to imagine horrible things that this man could be doing to my daughter and felt HORRIBLE!
When I pulled the car up his daughter had returned and they were both singing a song to Fia to calm her down as she was concerned to why had mommy had left so abruptly. At this moment, I felt terrible that all of these thoughts had run through my mind. I then saw the delight of my daughters face and was so pleased at the lesson I taught her. Trust your instincts and enjoy the other human beings around you! And then I reminded her that this doesn't not hold true when you are driving as everyone else is a Fuck. She reminds me with this everyday by saying, "Fuck you", "Fuck you"!
Ruthie - "Trust your instincts and enjoy the other human beings around you!" I totally agree. Kindness begets kindness more often than not. Also, I can't wait until Fia gets to kindergarten and shares her awesome vocabulary with the other kids :)
